Byron is probably the most hyped place along the East Coast, except for maybe the Whitsunday Islands. So, I arrived with super high hopes on the 13th... and was not disappointed!
Known for it's authentic hippy/ surfer vibe, Byron is a really gorgeous town, lots of lovely little boutiques/ restaurants/ surf-style shops and cafe's - it's almost like a tiny Brighton meets Camden, meets a tropical climate.
Lots of locals in bare feet, lots of surfers of course, and coffee a-plenty.
I arrived at the hostel and was pleased to have quite a social room - it was mixed and there seemed to be a nice group. We had a few drinks that evening, and I turned it fairly early (10ish?) because i had booked to go surfing early the next morning. Annoyingly, the gang in my room came back, were super loud until very late, went out for a couple of hours, and then came back in the early hours and were super loud AGAIN. Nobody wants to be the party pooper, but I was pretty much fuming. Luckily, Australian laws about drinking in public or licensed places are pretty strict, so the security man came to break up the party and I got some sleep.
The next morning I had SURFING, would you believe it. Although it's known that to learn in Byron is more expensive because of it's reputation and many many beaches, I thought if I'm going to give it a try, it should be here! So I did, spent the morning out with 5 others and our instructor. Surprisingly, I loved it! It was a cloudy day so not too bright or hot, and good waves on the beach we went to. Also, the group was really great too, and we spent the rest of the afternoon at a pub by the beach, before a quick nap, and then a few more drinks in the later evening at the same bar, with live music.
I had signed up for MORE surfing the next day, as I was determined to go start to finish on my own (which I achieved, yay!), so set out again at 9am the next day for a few more hours of seaside fun. After that, I lay down for a few hours (I was super sore from the day before - surfing is truly a full body work out), and then met up the surfing gang in the evening to check out the Twilight Market and do the famous Lighthouse walk. This we did, saw the lighthouse and also walked around the point to the most Easterly point on Mainland Australia.
We rounded the evening off with the "best burger in town" - turns out, it really was amazing!
I loved Byron, think it was my favourite place so far. Amazing food - I discovered an icecream place called Bella Rosa and had the most delicious icecream EVER (one scoop dark sugar free choc, one scoop honeycomb peanut butter -YUM), really nice people and just a lovely town feel. I also treated myself to a touch of shopping, which is always nice.
