Hola!
So safely at destination number 1 - Cairns, right up in the north east of Aus. I arrived yesterday afternoon after a (rather sketchy) flight up from Sydney - there's some kind of impending dust storm down there at the mo.. hoping that clears up before I'm there again!
As a place, Cairns is probably pretty much what I expected - quite tailored towards visitors but not touristy in feel, very spread out and leafy, and HOT. Really hot.
So after doing not much yesterday aside from scoping the town out, I booked a trip to Fitzroy Island today (pictured), after a reco from a girl in my dorm room at the hostel. I had Fitzroy on my list of things to see and it was good to get an idea of good prices etc.
Fitzroy is a 45-min boat trip from Cairns, and well worth it. Although I only had a couple of hours to explore, I got to see it's famous Nudey (not nudist!) beach, and walk through some amazing rainforesty track to get there. Lots of scuba-ing and diving to be done if one so wishes, but personally, I couldn't face getting into a wetsuit (mandatory, since it's "stinger season") in such hot weather!
Aside from that, I've been eating lots of amazing (fresh and cheap!) local sushi, and sampling the odd chocolate flavours I can find at the local supermarket - which is woolworths, what a throwback!
See ya later.
